ITTP students have included practitioners from both northern and southern Sri Lanka, Palestinian mental health professionals from the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme, the Academic Dean of the Anglican Theological Seminary in Zimbabwe and Tibetan refugees from India. All former students are now treating trauma survivors, working in their home countries, training other practitioners, or pursuing further education in the field.
All of our previous students have returned to their countries and are using their training in their work. For example, Janaka Jayawickrama, an ITTP student from 2000, returned and focused on working with grass-roots organizations on economic development issues, mental health programmes, migration and trafficking issues in Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan. Recently Janaka has been actively involved in the rebuilding of the coastal communities affected by the Dec. 24th 2004 tsunami with the Green Movement of Sri Lanka. Moreover, several have expanded their influence beyond their home communities. Again, Janaka is a Research Associate at the Disaster and Development Centre at Northumbria University, at present heading the Trauma Risk Reduction Programme. This Programme is currently working on capacity building of agencies and practitioners that are working with the conflict and disaster affected communities in Central and Southern Africa and Sahel, Central and South Asia.
